Welcome to Dark Sky Alpacas in rugged and beautiful North Cornwall.
We completed our ‘escape to the country’ in December 2017, leaving behind the corporate world, and set to work establishing our alpaca farm and business.
Our aim is to breed top class animals, contribute to the developing alpaca industry here in the UK and enjoy life spent in the wonderful outdoors with these beautiful, sensitive creatures.
As there’s no substitute for experience, our policy is to get involved and be hands on! For example, we set up our farm with biosecurity paramount in our design and implementation, so there’s approaching 2km of buried ‘badger proof’ fencing at the perimeter, erected with our own blood, sweat and tears.
We’ve also thrown ourselves into the show scene with a really enjoyable season kicking off at the Nationals in 2019.
We were delighted to win ‘Most Successful Small Breeder’ at the Somerset Country Show in September.
Along the way, it’s been invaluable to meet, visit and work with so many other alpaca breeders who have been generous with their time and advice and great fun too. We’d love to welcome you to our farm to meet our alpacas to see if there’s any way we can support your business and breeding plans.
We have set up our breeding programmes to focus on grey Huacaya and both light and grey Suri. We like a challenge (!) and we love both the classic and modern grey colours in addition to the simply stunning light Suri.
Our herd has developed from an initial mix of Huacaya and Suri, from Popham Alpacas, to which we have added both breeding females and stud males from Faraway Suri, Springfarm and Urcuchillay in the UK.
In pursuit of new and outstanding suri genetics, we also imported three studs and two breeding females from the renowned Surico and Thistledown Suri in New Zealand at the end of October 2019.
Our studs have exemplary credentials and we will be offering outside matings to other breeders in 2020.
We are lucky enough to live on the edge of beautiful Bodmin Moor which has been designated as an International Dark Sky Landscape in recognition of the exceptional quality of the night sky - the inspiration for our name.
